__IB Math Studies SL (prerequisite: Algebra II)__

*IB Mathematical Studies*is a one-year Standard Level (SL) IB course that is part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (DP). In addition to satisfying the IB Group 5 Diploma requirement, the course will also fulfill the NCSCS Math requirement for one year of study. Mathematical Studies focuses on introducing important mathematical concepts through the development of mathematical techniques. Through the study of Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Statistics, students will go beyond the traditional practice of solving equations, and focus on communication of mathematical content, allowing for analysis, evaluation, and application of mathematical data. The study of multiple mathematical disciplines will give students a clearer understanding of the way mathematics is used to recognize patterns solve problems in an integrated and holistic manner. Mathematical Studies will also concentrate on the understanding of mathematics within a global and cultural context. The course will examine the development in mathematics as a dynamic subject and the societal attitudes that shape the way math is applied and interpreted. IB Mathematical Studies will include an Internal Assessment portfolio. The portfolio consists of a piece of work that give student an opportunity to independently investigate real-world mathematical problems and seek solutions in a process of mathematical investigation or modeling. Students will also take an externally assessed IB exam at the end of the course. Both of these assessments will contribute to the student’s IB grade and will count towards the earning of an IB Diploma.
